This week students are continuing to practice identifying claims, counter claims, and rebuttals. They are also practicing making and supporting their own claims. 1st, 3rd, and 6th period are getting caught up with their journals, making sure they have completed up to QW 55. They are also completing claim/ evidence task cards. What's New?We will be reading the short story "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury this week. Reading this story will allow us to review our narrative skills, while also providing us the with the content we need to write an argumentative essay. Pre- Reading Activities: - Probable Passage -Vocabulary Practice: Using context clue -Anticipation Guide: Technology focused -Pre- writing activity (paragraph) Vocab Practice Chart Example:During reading ACTIVITIES:Students read the story as a class by listening to the audio reading by Lydia Kay. The reading also had visual representations throughout. Click the image below to be taken to the audio reading of the story: After Reading Activities:After reading the story, students watched the episode version of "The Veldt" and compared the two versions by analyzing the setting, characters, plot events, and resolution. Click on the image below to be taken to the episode version of "The Veldt": Below you will find Tips for each of the Close- Reading questions:Foreshadowing Practice:Students completed a Quick Write where they discussed the literary technique foreshadowing, and the ways in which a author can use foreshadowing in their writing. Students watched a compilation of examples of foreshadowing in Disney movies. They chose three to complete a foreshadowing chart. Next, students started working on a Foreshadowing PowerPoint about "The Veldt" by downloading it in Verge. In the PP Students did the following: -Reviewed the definition of foreshadowing -Practiced picking endings based on clues given in 50- word short stories -Lastly, identified five examples of foreshadowing in "The Veldt" and explained their reasoning for choosing those specific examples Once students uploaded the PP back to verge, they completed the assignment below by filling out answers on their answer sheets. (This is additional practice in using hints/ clues to infer endings of stories.) |
